Prevention And Treatment of Under-Eye Bags

As we age, we develop bags — mild swelling or puffiness — under the eyes. They are caused by a weakening of tissues under the eyes. Bags under the eyes are rarely a serious issue, but they may annoy those concerned with their appearance. The eye bags appear more prominent if there are any shadows or discolored skin under the eyes.

Here in this post, we’ll guide you about the prevention and treatment of under-eye bags.

#1 What causes the under-eye bags?

The under-eye bags develop gradually over time. Here are some causes:

Aging: Several factors influence the development of under-eye bags. When we are young, our body produces a considerable amount of collagen and elastin, responsible for skin’s firmness and elasticity. However, as we age, our skin produces very little of these two ingredients, and the skin sags and wrinkles, leading to fine lines, dark circles, and under-eye bags.

Genetics: A vast majority of eye bags have a significant hereditary component. That means that if both of your parents have under-eye bags, the chances that you have them are much higher.

Fluid retention: Eating too much salty food may increase fluid retention.

Allergies: Seasonal and other allergies, including food allergies.

Lack of sleep: Puffiness around your eyes is often caused due to your circulatory system moving slowly, leaving excess fluids beneath the eyes.

Dehydration: The skin around your eyes may look saggy and sunken due to dehydration.

#2 Treatment

Home-based treatment

Try a cool compress: Cooling the affected area helps reduce inflammation and swelling by reducing the blood flow. You can use a frozen bag of vegetables, chilled cucumber, refrigerated spoon, or an ice pack, over closed eyes for a few minutes.

Avoid alcohol: Dehydration may cause the skin to appear saggy. Drink plenty of water and avoid drinking too much alcohol.

Frequent dieting: Skip the fad diets and try to maintain a stable weight

Don’t rub your eyes: Constant rubbing of your eyes may break small blood vessels around the eyes.

Sleeping position: Sleep on your back and even add an extra pillow under your head.

Use eye creams: Your eye cream with caffeine may bring your tired peepers back to life. Caffeine is a vasoconstrictor, meaning it constricts blood vessels.

Acupressure: It is a circulation-boosting exercise to help relax the muscles around your eyes.

Medical treatments for eye bags

If you think home-based remedies are not yielding the desired result, you can go for medical treatment. Here are some of them:

Fillers: Dermal filler is a hyaluronic acid injection that helps boost the appearance of sunken or discolored under-eye areas. While dermal filler is not FDA-approved for use under the eyes, fillers are often found useful in reversing under-eye bags and dark circles. The under-eye fillers provide immediate results with a brighter and less tired-looking under-eye area.

Laser skin resurfacing: This treatment removes the outer layers of skin to boost the production of new skin cells. The new skin cells appear smooth, tightened, wrinkle-free, and more youthful. The therapy involves little to no pain.

Blepharoplasty: It is a surgical procedure that is performed to restore the youthful appearance to the eyes. It is necessary in cases where sagging upper eyelids get in the way of their vision.
