Dermal Fillers: What to Know Before You Try?

Signs of aging are always stubborn. They do not leave your face even with the best skincare products in the market. Fortunately, dermal fillers are in demand today due to their non-invasive, non-surgical, and pain-free approach to removing aging signs. But there is a multitude of factors that can affect the efficacy of dermal fillers in every individual case. If you are considering reducing your signs of aging with dermal fillers, it is best to gain information to make a well-informed decision.

Here is a guide about everything you need to know before trying dermal fillers!

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are FDA-approved injectable implants inserted under the skin using a needle. They are used to plump up the face, smoothen the skin, and reduce wrinkles.

The FDA has approved the use of four types of dermal fillers: Hyaluronic acid, Calcium hydroxylapatite, Poly-L-lactic acid, and Polymethylmethacrylate.

Do’s When Getting Dermal Fillers-

  • Ensure that your chosen physician is a board-certified and well-experienced dermatologist or plastic surgeon. There can be side effects like discolorations, infections, and lumps if the procedure is not performed expertly.
  • Ask your friends who have already undergone the procedure about their doctor and experience.
  • Inform your doctor about every health-related condition and infection you may have.
  • Follow everything your doctor suggests before and after your procedure for the best results.

What is the Cost Range for Dermal Fillers?

The average cost of dermal fillers depends on the number of syringes one requires. A single needle starts from $700. Counterfeited dermal fillers are easily acquirable, and you should be skeptical if the price is too good to be true.

Dont’s When Getting Dermal Fillers-

  • If you are expecting a baby or are a new mother, it is best to avoid dermal fillers until breastfeeding ends.
  • Get your dermal filler appointment after dental work. The pressure applied during dental treatments can misplace the fillers.
  • Do not take any anti-coagulants and blood-thinning medications which can lead to excessive bleeding during the procedure.
  • Avoid injecting dermal fillers in infected areas, potentially spreading the infection to other places.
  • Avoid touching the injected area and strenuous activity after the treatment as it can spread the fillers in the wrong places.
  • Dermal fillers should not be used for body contouring because that application is not approved by the FDA.

How Long Do the Results Last?

Dermal fillers are mostly not permanent and dissolve or get absorbed in the body naturally. Among the four, hyaluronic acid and calcium hydroxylapatite occur naturally in our bodies and hence only last up to eighteen months. Poly-L-lactic acid is used to make biodegradable medical products like dissolvable stitches and lasts up to two years as dermal fillers. Polymethylmethacrylate beads cannot be absorbed by the body and last permanently.

However, if you do not like the final result, you can ask your plastic surgeon to dissolve the fillers enzymatically.
